Kingdom Mentality – “The Influence of a Kingdom Servant”

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shared profound insights into the Kingdom of God, providing a blueprint for how His followers should live and influence the world around them. Among His teachings, Matthew 5:13-16 stands out as a powerful reminder of our role as Kingdom servants:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Salt of the Earth: Preserving and Enhancing

Salt was a valuable commodity in the ancient world, used not only for seasoning but also for preserving food. Jesus’ metaphor of His followers as the “salt of the earth” underscores the importance of maintaining our distinctiveness and purpose. As Kingdom servants, we are called to preserve the values and principles of the Kingdom of God in a world often lacking moral and spiritual integrity. Our presence should enhance the lives of those around us, adding the “flavor” of Christ’s love and truth.

But what happens when salt loses its saltiness? While salt, in its chemical form, remains stable, the metaphor suggests a loss of influence or purpose. As believers, our effectiveness is compromised when we conform to the patterns of this world instead of transforming it. To avoid losing our saltiness, we must stay rooted in the Word, continually seeking to embody the teachings of Christ in our actions and interactions.

Light of the World: Illuminating and Guiding

Jesus also calls us the “light of the world.” Light is essential for visibility, guidance, and safety. A city on a hill is visible to all, serving as a landmark and point of reference. Similarly, our lives should shine brightly, providing direction and hope to those around us. Our actions, driven by our faith, should reflect the character of Christ and illuminate the path to God for others.

Hiding our light under a bowl contradicts our purpose. Just as a lamp is placed on a stand to benefit everyone in the house, our faith should be evident and active, impacting our communities positively. By letting our light shine through good deeds, we point others to the glory of our Heavenly Father.

Living with a Kingdom Mentality

To influence the world as salt and light, we must adopt a Kingdom mentality. This means:

  1. Remaining Distinct: Uphold the values of the Kingdom in all areas of life. Resist the temptation to conform to worldly standards that compromise your faith and integrity.

  2. Actively Engaging: Be intentional in your interactions, seeking to add value and bring positive change wherever you go. Whether in your family, workplace, or community, strive to reflect Christ’s love and truth.

  3. Shining Brightly: Don’t hide your faith. Let it be visible through your actions, words, and attitudes. Engage in acts of kindness and service that point others to God’s goodness and grace.

  4. Staying Rooted: Continuously immerse yourself in Scripture and prayer. This keeps your faith vibrant and your purpose clear, ensuring that you remain effective in your calling.

As Kingdom servants, our influence is profound. We are called to be the salt that preserves and enhances and the light that illuminates and guides. By embracing this Kingdom mentality, we fulfill our purpose and bring glory to our Father in heaven, transforming the world around us in the process.

Let your saltiness remain potent and your light shine brightly, for the glory of God and the advancement of His Kingdom.
