ASK-SEEK-KNOCK
In Matthew 7:7-12, Jesus shares some powerful teachings about prayer, persistence, and the nature of God’s goodness. Let’s break down these verses and see how they apply to our lives today.
Verses 7-8: The Promise of Answered Prayer
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Visualizing the Promise:
- Ask: Imagine a child asking their parent for help. The parent, loving and attentive, is eager to assist. Similarly, God listens when we ask.
- Seek: Think of searching for a hidden treasure. The more diligently we search, the more likely we are to find it. God encourages us to seek Him and His wisdom.
- Knock: Picture someone knocking on a door, waiting for it to be opened. Persistence in knocking shows determination. God promises that our persistence in seeking Him will not go unanswered.
Verses 9-11: The Goodness of God
“Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
Visualizing the Goodness:
- Imagine a loving father who desires the best for his children. When a child asks for something good, the father wouldn’t give something harmful. Jesus uses this analogy to highlight how much more our perfect Heavenly Father desires to give us good things.
Verse 12: The Golden Rule
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Visualizing the Golden Rule:
- Picture a community where everyone treats others with the kindness and respect they themselves desire. This is the essence of Jesus’ teaching. By practicing empathy and compassion, we reflect God’s love to those around us.
Applying These Teachings
- Prayer and Persistence: Jesus encourages us to be persistent in prayer. Don’t give up if you don’t see immediate results. Trust that God hears you and will respond in His perfect timing.
- Trust in God’s Goodness: Just as a good parent desires the best for their children, trust that God desires the best for you. He knows what you need and will provide it.
- Living the Golden Rule: Treat others with the same kindness and respect you wish to receive. This simple yet profound principle can transform relationships and communities.
Conclusion
Matthew 7:7-12 teaches us about the power of prayer, the goodness of God, and the importance of treating others with love and respect. By asking, seeking, and knocking, we draw closer to God and experience His blessings. Trust in His goodness and live out the Golden Rule in your daily interactions. This passage is a beautiful reminder of God’s love and our call to reflect that love to others.
